The revival of Punk has led to a whole plethora of bands that have fused Punk Rock with an element of pop or even hip-hop.
As Punk’s political message became redundant, the unlikely place for its resurgence was the Western US state of California. Alongside other giants such as Green Day, Offspring charged to the forefront of the new-era Pop-Punk wave in 1984.
While the message had changed radically, the music was still aimed to reach the audience of bored teenagers who were stuck in a mundane life. It just goes to show, some formulas are winners no matter what you do. As the Americans say: “If it ain’t broke, then don’t try to fix it”.
The Offspring have had a turbulent history with many changes to the lineup over the years. While many think that Offspring were a one hit wonder with Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) from their Album Americana in 1998, they actually have a massive following and have sold over 40 million records worldwide. This makes the band one of the most successful punk bands ever and they have released a total of nine studio albums, which is a terrific effort. The Offspring is currently working on its tenth studio album which is due to be released in 2018.
The band was originally called Manic Subsidal and played at the underground venues of Huntingdon Beach. The Offspring has toured a lot, even by Punk Rock standards and the members make it a point to remain very actively engaged with their audience. Like other groups, they seemed destined to be consigned to history, but they keep coming back with fresh material and influences that draws in the younger generation. The band members are now pushing fifty years of age, but when they are on stage, they seem as young as ever and always put in very energetic performances.
